The wind was howling between the trees that evening.  They could smell the coming storm in the air, the moisture filling their lungs as they breathed deeply of it.  He had been thinking about that night for weeks, but not because of the rain.  Truth be told, Zarrek hated the rain.  It was cold and bitter and soaked him to the bone.  It had been pouring on the worst night of his life, and he resented being reminded of it; those memories were too terrible to trudge up.  No, it her he had been thinking about.

Starshine had an incredible beauty about made him hunger so badly hat he was sure he could never be satiated.  It was not just beauty, however; she had grace but also humility, musical talent as well as a voice like an angel.  He had heard the rumors about Starr, their gifts, their purity, and if she was anyone to represent her kind, they were all true.  The only thing that could make his heart melt was her smile; the only think that took away his pain was her song.

Zarrek had sworn for years that he would not love, that he was not able to love.  He had lost too much, seen too much… hurt too much.  He even believed that the dark arts that he practiced prevented him from being able to share his heart with others.  Only one other woman besides Starshine had made him question all that, made him feel as though he could love, not simply burn with lust.  In the end, it seemed as though Starshine had been made for him, and she was the one who ignited new feelings within him.

After sunset, they ate their fill of the stew that she had prepared for him.  It was not exactly what he had been hungry for, but it warmed him from the chill outside, and it had the finest flavors that he could have wanted.  Afterwards, she brought out fruits and sweetbread for dessert.  Even though it was not as fancy as what he would have been served in the palace, he enjoyed the feeling of being close to her as they shared the melon and berries.

“You have some juice,” he whispered to her, “right here.”

Zarrek leaned close to her, and kissed the juice from the side of her chin.  When she gave a soft laugh rather than pulling away, he took the opportunity to kiss her lips as well.  She did not resist that either, and he very soon had his arms around her, sharing in a kiss with more passion than they had been able to show for one another for months.  Starshine moaned softly, and gave back to him in kind.  It was a relief, really, to not have to worry about her far finding them together.  At last, she could dwell freely in his affections.

Outside, the wind grew stronger. but they did not care.  Even while the rain began to patter down on the old wooden home in the mountains, he was taking her hand to escort her out of the dining room.  It was to be their first night together, the first time that they could let their passions go free and unbound, and he was not about to lie her down on the floor beside their plates.  She was his everything, and he was going to show her just how much he treasured her; it had to be perfect.  In some ways, he was nervous about taking away her purity, but she had insisted that it was what she wanted, that she was no different for taking his.

As the hour grew late, her voice joined the noises of the storm that surrounded them.  There was a point. as he laid beside her panting, his heart pounding in his chest as she curled up contentedly against his sweating body, that he changed his mind about the rain.  Maybe he loved the sound of the storm, after all.

About Legends of Lorata

Eleanor Willow is the author of the high fantasy series Legends of Lorata, which takes place on a medieval-style world filled with elves, dragons and faeries. There is also a fourth race, one that is rare and magical: the angelic Starr. Lorata is a planet where four gods are known: good, evil, elemental and celestial-- and there are plenty of legends about them all! One of the most important ones is the prophecy of Jenh's champion, Loracaz, who is promised to return to the land whenever evil threatens to take hold. There are currently for books planned. The first one is completed and currently being edited. Any news I have on about publishing will be shared as it comes in!

  4. Zarrek and Starshine have this intense kind of reationship, especially since he has a lot of turbulent emotions going through him. Book one is mostly about Zarrek’s onlder brother, but Zarrek himself take center stage in book two. He is the most emotional, principled character I have, and the fact that he ends up with Starshine is…. well, wow. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. He needs her, really, even though it takes him years to really finalize that understanding.
The other thing I want to say about this post is that yes, it runs towards risqué. I don’t get much more graphic than this in the actual books. I hint at it, refer to it (geez, Zarrek has issues with it that he has to sort out), but I don’t use certain words outright. My characters do have adult relationships, and those relationships do affect their lives and the plot (hey, they have to have children!), but I am *not* writing erotica. I leave plenty to the imagination.
On Lorata, the idea of sexuality is very open. Just like with me, people should be able love whomever they want. Still, the idea of purity comes up several times, not because I personally want to ask others to be pure, but because it is important to some cultures. In Onsira, for example, only the royal family is expected to take any rights before making love; everyone else is free to do what feels right to them. In the desert kingdon of Jzienfiarm, the residents are expected to have one mate ever, even if one of them dies. Other kingdoms have their own traditions, but in general, if you’re in love, then you have the right to share your body with that person. I will post later on the idea of marriage and rites.
